Harmonic Minor Modes
I thought I would spend this morning quickly drawing up a cheat sheet for the Harmonic Minor modes.
The Harmonic Minor scale (sometimes referred to as the Mohammedan Scale) is essentially the natural minor scale with a sharpened 7th degree, this - if related back to the relative Major (Ionian) gives us a sharpened second degree (as can be heard in the music of Mozart, Beethoven and others).
The really interesting thing about this scale is it’s application in both songwriting and improvisation, especially when it is turned into modes itself. I’ve written up a quick cheat sheet with all it’s modes and it really is great for experimenting with - often giving a very middle eastern and exotic vibe to the music it's utilised in.
Feel free to come and download it on my Facebook page:
